A face lift for Maternity
29th Aug 2025

How wonderful to see the Chitambo Hospital Maternity Unit renovated and equipped, thanks to funding from Groningen City Council, in the Netherlands, via Dutch Dr Annet Dekker, former doctor at Chitambo.
This funding enabled complete renovation of the labour ward, pre-term baby ward, and pre/post natal ward, including re-painting, re flooring and refurbishment of the shower and toilet facilities.
In addition, a range of equipment was provided, including 2 new delivery beds; 3 bed-chairs; 2 portable incubators (Baby Warming Nests); 2 phototherapy machines; a resuscitaire; a suction machine; BP machines; fetal scopes etc.
The portable incubators were donated by Dr Leah Seaman, Paediatrician, Kapiri Mposhi District hospital, Central Province, Zambia.
Some of the other items (the phototherapy machines, resuscitaire, and suction machine) were sourced and transported from UK by Mr Albert Gregori, Orthopaedic Surgeon, and Dr Trish O'Connor, Emergency Medicine Specialist, who volunteer with FlySpec Zambia: www.flyspec.org
Thank you to Sister Ketra Mubita, Nursing Officer in Charge, for contributing to the sourcing and of the equipment, arranging of the unit, and providing the photos.
Chitambo is on the up and up.
