A momentous occassion
10th May 2023
What an immense privilege for Jo Vallis, FoCH Chair, to meet His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema (HH), President of the Republic of Zambia, on his state visit to Scotland.
Firstly we gathered at Panmure House, Edinburgh, the former home of Economist, Adam Smith. We were welcomed by Professor Richard Williams, Principal and Vice Chair of Heriot Watt University, which was hosting the day.
We were then addressed by various dignitaries including Professor Sir Geoff Palmer, Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University; Christina McKelvie, Scottish Minister for Culture, Europe, and International Development; and finally President HH himself. He talked about Zambia's economic directions including building business investments as well as promoting the 'greater good' of the most vulnerable in Zambian society.
We then travelled to Heriot-Watt University's out of town Riccarton campus for Roundtable discussions on various topics such as climate justice, education etc.
Finally, there was a photo shoot with the President and a chance for members of the Scottish Zambian Partnership (SCOZAP) to greet him personally.
What a wonderful day. Thank you to all the organisers and especially to President HH and the Zambian delegation for coming.
Thank you, too, to Mr Norman Chipakupaku, Zambian Permanent Secretary for Defense, for arranging the FoCH presence at this unique event. We couldn't be more grateful.
