A tale of 2 hearts
6th Aug 2025

This is Partnership:
At roughly the same time as Friends of Chitambo (FoCH) International Board Members were attending the launch of the Scottish Government-backed Global Health Partnership Programme, in Edinburgh Scotland (https://www.gov.scot/news/improving-access-to-healthcare-in-scotland-and-africa/), members of the Chitambo Hospital team, Central Province, Zambia, were visiting the David Livingstone Monument in Chitambo District, Central Province, Zambia, to learn more about the connection with Scotland. See pictures.
The Chitambo team reported that the Monument is beautifully kept, with new features such as the new Information Centre, now fully operational. In the heart of the African bush, it has real tourist potential.
Livingstone is the cement between our communities. He was born in Blantyre, Scotland, and died at Chief Chitambo's village in Zambia. His heart was buried under an mpundu tree, now marked by the marble Monument. Livingstone is the basis of the budding health partnership between Chitambo Hospital and NHS Lanarkshire,in Scotland.
At the Scottish Partnership Conference, FoCH Board members were privileged to communicate with 2 main keynote speakers: Professor Sir Gregor Smith, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, and Professor Valerie Fleming, Midwife and Professor of Womens' Studies. Both are from Lanarkshire Scotland, and both know and love the David Livingstone Birthplace museum at Blantyre, Lanarkshire. They expressed real heart for supporting the developing Twinning arrangement with Chitambo.
The stars are indeed aligned for Chitambo.
